New playground at Alroy Oval vandalised prior to completion

The transformation of Alroy Oval in Singleton Heights has been disrupted with graffiti vandals attacking the soon-to-be-completed new playground.

The $250,000 project, funded by the NSW Regional Housing Fund, includes the new soccer-themed playground in keeping with the vision of the site to become a premier soccer precinct, alongside a full-size outdoor basketball court.

Singleton Council’s Director Infrastructure and Planning Services Group Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr labelled the tagging as “senseless vandalism”, directly impacting the progression of works at the Alroy Oval Sports Precinct. 

“Council staff arrived on site this morning to find the new equipment covered in offensive graffiti, which will cost thousands of dollars to rectify,” he said. 

“The playground was scheduled to be completed and opened to the public in coming weeks, and this senseless vandalism is a blight on the hard work and investment into this facility that our community deserve. 

“I would appeal to the people in our community that if you do see any suspicious behaviour in or around our public spaces, please contact NSW Police immediately.”

The Alroy Oval Masterplan, which was developed in consultation with Singleton Strikers FC and Singleton Track and Field, will provide for three full-sized football pitches, upgraded amenities building and car park, shelters and footpaths. Federal Member for the Hunter Dan Repacholi MP made a funding commitment to Alroy Oval during the Federal election and Council are working with him and others to seek further funding to deliver the plan in its entirety.
