To celebrate ICAW24 and local action to divert organic waste from landfill, Singleton Council in partnership with Singleton Community Gardens (SCG) and Solo Resource Recovery are hosting a compost workshop and giveaway!

The workshop will be facilitated by local 'Compost Queen' and valued Community Garden member Ernie Harbott, exploring:

  • What is compost? (The basic science behind it)
  • What are the benefits of composting?
  • How to set up and maintain a compost system

A compost themed prize pack (valued over $200) is up for grabs for one lucky participant! See below for more details.

What is International Compost Awareness Week?

International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is an annual initiative of the Centre for Organic Research & Education, promoting a week of activities, events and education to improve awareness of the importance of compost.

Why is composting important?

Recent data indicates that around 1.7 million tonnes of food waste occurs in NSW annually, where households contribute 688,000 tonnes to this tally - that's the equivalent of around $965 per person!

Beyond the waste of resources and money, food waste also has many detrimental impacts on the environment. When food waste is sent to landfill, it breaks down alongside other general waste items, generating harmful greenhouse gases and nutrients that can find their way into the soil and waterways - potentially damaging the environment for generations to come.

Composting ensures that food waste is processed in an environmentally effective way and can in fact improve soil health, boost crop yields and water retention and support rich biodiversity.
