Singleton Bypass

Transport for NSW is planning for a future New England Highway bypass of Singleton to improve traffic flow, travel times and safety through Singleton town centre by reduced traffic including heavy  freight.

About the project

The $700 million joint funded project will remove one of the Hunter region’s most notorious bottlenecks and is now entering the final steps of development and project approval. The eight-kilometre project will bypass five sets of traffic lights in the CBD and is the largest road infrastructure investment in Singleton's history.

The Australian Government has committed $560 million and the NSW Government $140 million to the project.

In November 2023, the State Government awarded the contract for design and construction of the Singleton Bypass to Acciona Construction Pty Ltd to deliver the Singleton Bypass.

Acciona will progress site investigations and finalise the detailed design in preparation for the start of major work in mid-2024. The project is expected to open to traffic in late 2026, weather permitting.

Project Design

In response to the NSW Government’s Environmental Impact Statement in 2020, Council’s submission called for a number of changes to the proposed design, including dual carriageway and a full interchange at Putty Road.

On 16 April 2021, the NSW Government announced it would build a full interchange for the bypass with Putty Road. In the media release, the Government committed that both the Muswellbrook and Singleton bypasses will begin in 2022.
