Spring into the new year with the Singleton Mattress Muster

Singleton is springing into the new year with the return of the popular Mattress Muster event, where residents can drop off up to four mattresses for free at the Singleton Waste Management Facility on Saturday 21 January 2023.
In addition to the cost savings for residents, they’ll also be helping the environment with 75 per cent of mattress components to be recycled.
Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr, Singleton Council’s Director Infrastructure and Planning said the Mattress Muster was a highlight on Council’s sustainability calendar, with 29.6 tonnes of mattresses collected in the 2021/22 financial year alone.
“The Singleton Mattress Muster is a really important event for our community that encourages recycling and reduces the incidence of illegal dumping, which are significant outcomes in the Singleton Sustainability Strategy,” he said.
“We know that disposing of unwanted mattresses can also be expensive for households, so this is a service truly benefits our community in more ways than one – it helps people get rid of old mattresses cost effectively, as well as to make sure the mattresses are then properly disposed of in a way that is environmentally sustainable.
“Up to 75% of mattress components can be recycled and made into other products, and anyone who comes along on Saturday 21 January 2023 can be rest assured that cleaning out their homes responsibly will also have a positive impact on the planet.”
Mattress components that can be recycled include:
- Steel springs – recycled into products such as roof sheeting
- Foam – recycled into products such as carpet underlay
- Husk – recycled into weed matting and mulch
- Timber – recycled into kindling, mulch and animal bedding
- Fabric – used in products such as acoustic paneling
The Singleton Mattress Muster will be held on Saturday 21 January 2023 between 10am and 2pm at the Waste Management Facility on Dyrring Road, Fern Gully.
Proof of address will be required and there is a limit of four mattresses per customer.
