Households are now receiving kitchen caddies and compostable liners as Singleton Council looks to equip the community with everything it needs ahead of the start of the new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service on 30 June.

From this date, Singleton residents will place all their food scraps including meat, bones, dairy, fruit and vegetables into their existing green bin alongside their garden organics like lawn clippings and weeds.

Green bins will then be collected weekly and turned into professionally treated compost.

Council’s General Manager Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr said the delivery of the 7L benchtop kitchen caddies is part of making the transition to FOGO as simple as possible.

"Using your caddy is easy. Keep it somewhere handy near where you prepare food, and when it's full, or every two to three days, tip the contents, liner and all, into your green bin," he said.

"We're also supplying a roll of 150 compostable liners to help keep things tidy along with an info pack with everything you need to know about how to FOGO, including what can and can't go in the bin.

“Your caddy will be delivered to your door in early June, ready to use when the service starts.”

Introducing FOGO aligns with NSW Government requirements for all councils to provide a source-separated food organics and garden organics service to reduce organic waste in landfill and boost recycling efforts by 2030.

Neighbouring councils Cessnock and Maitland are also introducing weekly FOGO collections from 30 June, with residents in both communities receiving kitchen caddies and liners before the service starts.

Mr Fitzpatrick-Barr said FOGO would be a big step forward in creating a more Sustainable Singleton.

“We know many people are already doing their bit to reduce waste, and FOGO takes that one step further by giving everyone a practical way to keep food waste out of landfill,” he said.

From 30 June, the green bin will be collected weekly while the red general waste and yellow recycling bins will be collected fortnightly.

Residents in urban areas who require a greater level of service can opt in for a weekly red bin collection for an additional cost to their domestic waste service charge.
