Draft strategy aims to make future population growth in Singleton

With the Singleton population set to grow over the next 20 years, Singleton Council is planning for the needs of the community into the future with the development of its draft Local Housing Strategy.
The document will set the vision for housing across the local government area, ensuring a strategic approach to rural housing, urban and lifestyle living, housing diversity, supply and land-use opportunities.
Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr, Council’s Director Infrastructure and Planning Services said the Local Housing Strategy will ensure the housing needs of the growing community are met in a way that is sustainable, equitable and in line with community values.
And with a virtual workshop to be held on Wednesday 20 October 2021 and an online survey for the entire community to have input, everyone is encouraged to be part of the conversation.
“Singleton is centrally located in the Hunter Valley, making it an attractive lifestyle choice as a balance of city conveniences with all the benefits of rural living – so it’s no wonder an estimated 6,000 more people will call Singleton home by 2042,” Mr Fitzpatrick-Barr said.
“As more people migrate to our area, housing growth needs to be planned and managed in a way that maintains all of what we love about Singleton, and it’s vital that Council provides a clear path for development including rural, affordable and diverse housing types that complement the area’s character and heritage.
“The Local Housing Strategy will also support the sustainable supply of housing for everyone at all income levels, and outline strategic growth areas like Branxton, Belford, and Hunterview.”
Mr Fitzpatrick-Barr said while the plan focused on housing supply into the future, it was important that our current residents had input into setting the vision.
“It’s as simple as completing a short online survey, or talking to us at the online community workshop on Wednesday 20 October 2021 where we’ll go over the purpose of the strategy and answer any questions people have,” he said.
“We look forward to your feedback by 30 November 2021, and all the information we receive will be considered in the final draft document that will be publicly exhibited early next year. Once adopted, the Strategy will provide the blueprint for the provision of housing across our LGA.”
