Volunteers in the spotlight at Singleton Emergency Services Expo
Published on 13 May 2025
Singleton’s dedicated volunteers will be in the spotlight this month – not only at the rescheduled Emergency Services Expo on Saturday 24 May but right across National Volunteer Week.
The Singleton Sundial will light up orange from 16 – 26 May in recognition of Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and the Expo that will bring together local emergency services, including volunteers from agencies like NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW State Emergency Service, at Civic Park from 9am – 12pm.
It will also coincide with Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day on 21 May, which encourages people to wear orange to show their appreciation for the volunteers who help during emergencies like storms, floods, and bushfires.
Damian Morris, Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure and Planning, said there could be no better way to pay tribute to Singleton’s volunteers than at the Emergency Services Expo.
“The Expo is a great, free day out for families that offers fun and education, but also showcases the essential roles our services play when an emergency event happens,” he said.
“It’s fitting that the Expo, which we had to postpone in March because our emergency services were deployed to help communities impacted by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, has been rescheduled to during National Volunteers Week.
“It will be great to see the Sundial lit up orange in celebration of volunteers, and for the community to join us at the Expo to recognise their contributions.”
Mr Morris said Council has partnered with agencies including RFS, SES, Fire + Rescue NSW, NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service to hold the hugely popular Expo, which draws over 2000 people each year.
“We know families enjoy this unique opportunity to see local emergency services in action, experience live simulations and demonstrations, and learn how to prepare for an emergency event – all of which they can expect to see at the Expo on 24 May,” he said.
“We’ll have a great range of interactive displays on the day, emergency vehicles on show and hands-on activities for the kids.
“Fire + Rescue will be holding a live kitchen fire demonstration, our RFS juniors will be showing off their firefighting skills and a number of our agencies will come together to showcase how they collaborate in a simulated storm emergency.
“There’ll be even more mascots line up for the Mascot Race and for the first time, we’ll have Mascot Tug-O-War to demonstrate the importance of strength and strategy in emergencies.
“There’s something for everyone to enjoy at the Expo and it’s also the perfect opportunity to show your appreciation for the people who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.”
