Library writes new chapter with free training to support adult literac

As one of the few libraries in NSW with a specialised adult literacy support program, Singleton Library is running a free training program for members of the community to become an adult literacy tutor.

The training will be delivered by Jo Medlin, who recently featured in the SBS documentary Lost for Words which followed the path of eight Australians as they took part in an intensive nine-week adult literacy program.

Vicki Brereton, Council’s Director Organisation and Community Capacity said community members who took part in the training would join the Library’s Adult Literacy Support Program to assist adults who wished to improve their reading, writing or spelling.

The training will be held on Monday 11 April from 10am to 5pm. Lunch is included. A follow-up Zoom session to be organised at a later date.

“The Library first established an adult literacy program six years ago, providing training to community members to become qualified Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutors who are then matched with people who have identified they require support to provide one-on-one sessions,” Ms Brereton said.

“We’re very proud that Singleton’s program is held up as an example of what support is possible from a Library service, and fortunate to have Rob Stewart as part of our Library team who chairs the NSW Public Libraries Working Group on adult literacy (Coordinated by the NSW State Library) and is the liaison between the Reading Writing Hotline and public libraries.”

Bookings are essential to participate in the program and can be done online, by contacting the Library on 02 6578 7500, emailing or by visiting the Library to speak with staff.

Ms Brereton said adults who may need the support of the program are also encouraged to get in contact with the Library.

“Support sessions are held at the Library at a time that suits both the learner and the volunteer tutor, so this is a great opportunity for you or someone you know who wants to improve their reading, writing or spelling.”
