Renaming part of New England Highway – community proposals

On display until 30 September 2025, 11:59 PM

Due to construction of the Singleton Bypass Project, part of the New England Highway will change its location which means a new name is required for the section of road between the Hunter River at the Singleton Crossing bridge and approximately 570m north of Magpie Street at McDougalls Hill.

At its meeting of 19 August 2025, Council resolved to seek submissions from the community for a proposed road name, and for all submissions to be reviewed against the requirements of Transport for NSW and the Geographical Names Board. Those names that meet the requirements will be presented to Council for endorsement of a preferred name.

The preferred name will then be publicly exhibited for community feedback, and then submitted to the Geographical Names Board for official gazetting of the name.

The name George Street cannot be extended because the street numbers run in numeric order starting near the Singleton Crossing Bridge and ending at the intersection of York Street.
