Singleton’s sustainable action celebrated in Tidy Towns Awards

Singleton’s commitment to sustainability has been reaffirmed with significant recognition at the Keep Australia Beautiful 2025 NSW Tidy Towns Awards, with the swag of awards formally presented to Singleton Council this week.
No longer simply about the ‘tidy’ town, the long-standing awards recognise what makes communities resilient, attractive to live and work in, and the innovative ideas that achieve these outcomes.
Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore said four category wins, including overall for its population, and four highly commended placements in this year’s Tidy Towns Awards was due recognition for the wide range of sustainability-focused projects, programs and initiatives available in the Local Government Area.
“These results really show that we’re a leader in the sustainability space, which couldn’t be possible without the collaboration between our volunteer groups, passionate individuals, businesses and Council who all work together to promote sustainability in our community,” Cr Moore said.
“Council’s own Energy Wise program received a highly commended in the climate change mitigation and adaptation category, while a number of other Council-supported initiatives were recognised like Hunter Region Landcare Network’s Birds, Bees and Butterflies Urban Walks, also highly commended in its category, and Slow Food Singleton’s Grow it; Know it; Share it (Crop Swap), which won two awards.
“This is fantastic recognition for our whole community but also for the Singleton Tidy Towns Committee which has contributed to hundreds of projects benefitting Singleton over the past 30 years.”
Cr Moore said the Local Hero Award presented to Singleton’s 2024 Citizen of the Year, Diana Thorning, for her long-standing service to Singleton Tidy Towns was well deserved.
She also congratulated Singleton Clontarf 120, the Dyson Family Foundation and Singleton Heights Pre-School for recognition in their categories which were announced at the awards ceremony in Parkes on 11 October.
“These achievements are even greater motivation to keep pushing forward – working together, thinking big and building a more sustainable future,” Cr Moore said.
Joined by award winners and nominees, Singleton Tidy Towns president Lyn McBain made a special presentation of the accolades at Tuesday night’s Council meeting.
“One of the best things were heard from this year’s assessor was that some towns he visits seem to plateau off, but Singleton always surprises and improves with every visit, constantly raising the bar,” she said.
“Our community has expectations of how things should be, no matter how big we are. It is the Singleton spirit of individuals, organisations, Council and businesses which will see us meet the challenges of the future, and that makes us a very sustainable community indeed.”
