With the Singleton Bypass set to open in late 2026, the stretch of road currently named New England Highway between the Hunter River Crossing to approximately 570 metres north of Magpie Street at McDougalls Hill, will become unnamed.
At its meeting of 9 December 2025, Council resolved to exhibit the renaming of this section of road and invite community feedback. After calling for suggestions, Council received 20 eligible names which met the NSW Addressing Policy and User Manual, and Geographical Names Board guidelines. Councillors then took part in a ballot, with Hilltop Road selected as the preferred option. Transport for NSW has endorsed the name, and the Geographical Names Board has reviewed and pre-approved it for use in the Singleton Local Government Area.
Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 162 of the Roads Act 1993 and Part 2 of the Roads Regulation 2008 of the following road name:
| Suburbs: Dunolly, Singleton Heights + McDougalls Hill |
| Proposed Road Name |
Description |
Origin |
| Hilltop Road |
The stretch of road currently named New England Highway between the Hunter River Crossing to approximately 570 metres north of Magpie Street at McDougalls Hill |
The Hilltop has always been referred to for many decades. This road has led locals from Singleton township up to the service station at the top of McDougalls Hill. It was a gathering place for young people to meet up with others as far back as the 70’s. A night on the town always included time with friends at the Hilltop, looking over the valley at the beautiful views. The name is immediately identifiable with the area, which is important given the changes being made |
