Intermediate cities (iCities) are small to medium-sized urban centres with populations under 500,000. They act as important connectors between densely populated metropolitan areas and rural communities.

iCities play a crucial role in:

  • Delivering essential services and infrastructure to local and regional populations
  • Supporting economic activity and job creation
  • Promoting social and cultural connection across urban-rural areas

Why was Singleton selected to participate?

Singleton was selected from several Australian iCities due to its:

  • Strategic location between Sydney, Newcastle, and the Upper Hunter
  • Its regional influence
  • Unique biophysical, cultural, urban, and economic characteristics

With significant infrastructure already established through the mining industry and supporting sectors, Singleton has the potential to become a key regional hub and a strong candidate for sustainable urban development.

The iCities workshop

Singleton was one of only two Australian cities chosen to host the iCities Workshop: Localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards transformative actions.

The workshop was co-led by:

The sessions focused on the localisation of three key SDGs:

  • SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 15 - Life on Land

Participants included Council staff, Councillors, government agencies, researchers, and community members, who worked together to review strategic plans and propose future actions to drive positive change.

Outcome: The iCities Workshop Report 2024

The workshop outcomes have been captured in the iCities Workshop Report 2024, which identified:

  • 85+ challenges
  • 100+ transformative actions
  • Grouped across five key Axes of Reflection
  1. Natural Environment System - Singleton faces environmental challenges. Actions identified focus on restoring natural ecosystems, connecting with Country, and integrating green, blue, and grey infrastructure to support biodiversity and community wellbeing.
  2. Built Environment System - Opportunities exist to grow sustainably while preserving Singleton’s rich history and ensuring urban planning reflects the needs of all residents.
  3. Productive Activity System - As the region transitions economically, there’s a focus on fostering a diverse economy rooted in traditional knowledge, biodiversity, and inclusion.
  4. Infrastructure and Flow System - Community feedback highlighted the need for more youth and family-friendly services. This axis explores ways to support social infrastructure, cultural activities, and local identity.
  5. Infrastructure and Flow System - Strategic partnerships are key to advocating for infrastructure development. The goal is to ensure Singleton's urban services can support growth while enhancing liveability.

The iCities initiative marks a significant step in Singleton’s journey towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future. With a shared vision and strong local partnerships, we can build a Sustainable Singleton that works for everyone—now and for generations to come.
