Reconnect with nature during our Community Planting Day!

Head along to the Merricks Dog Park on Sunday 31 May from 9:30 to 11:30 for a Community Planting Day, held in place of the traditional National Tree Day planting event.

This hands-on, family-friendly event is a great opportunity to connect with your community while helping to restore important local habitat. This year’s planting will focus on restoring riverbank vegetation along the Hunter River, helping to improve biodiversity and create healthier habitats for local wildlife.  By planting trees in late-Autumn, they get a better chance to develop roots before the usual dry and cold winter conditions.

While this planting day replaces the traditional outdoor National Tree Day planting event, Council will still host a separate indoor National Tree Day event in July, featuring a free community plant giveaway.

What is National Tree Day?

Occurring on the last Sunday in July annually, National Tree Day is an initiative of Planet Ark and has grown into the nation’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. It’s a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.

The initiative started in 1996 and the impact to date is:

  • 26 million trees planted
  • 5 million volunteers
  • 10 million hours of time donated

It’s a day to venture outdoors, get to know your community, enhance the local environment and most importantly, have fun!

Why is it important?

Each year, around 300,000 people volunteer their time nationally to engage in environmental activities like this and actively make a difference to the world around them!

The event has been facilitated in Singleton for over two decades, where participants have included a breadth of our community - from school students and individuals to community groups and businesses alike.

Over the past decade our plantings have been focused on restoring an important nature corridor in Robinson Reserve, where the difference made is both exciting and important to supporting the natural processes that occur in a healthy environment.

This is a legacy that we are incredibly proud of working with our community to achieve!
