The $8.17 million redevelopment of the Alroy Oval Sports Precinct was officially opened on 21 February 2026, delivering three full-sized irrigated football fields, a modern gender-neutral amenities building, enhanced lighting, new footpaths, and improved parking.
However, post construction inspections identified issues affecting the quality and consistency of the playing surface across all three fields. Despite early remedial efforts by the head contractor and because of ongoing concerns, Council made the precautionary decision on 17 April to suspend organised training and competition at the facility.
Investigations by independent specialist advisors are currently underway to assess the underlying causes of the surface quality issues.
The outcomes of these investigations will inform the next stage of remediation works.
Council has been in regular communication with the Singleton Strikers Football Club that it is likely the fields will be unplayable for the duration of the season, and has worked with the club to relocate the club’s winter season training and fixtures to Cook Park No.5 at Rose Point Park, as well as create additional capacity at Civic Park. These arrangements have been supported by Athletics, Cricket, Touch and AFL clubs, which have assisted by sharing their facilities.
Our goal is now to reopen the facility ahead of the commencement of 2027 football season, ideally with the fullest amount of time possible to allow for the turf to properly establish.
We share our community’s disappointment that these issues have occurred so soon after the precinct’s official opening in February, however Council’s priority is, and always will be, the safety of players and our community.
We’re very thankful to the Singleton Strikers Football Club, players and families for their patience and understanding, as well as other sporting clubs for their support as we work to ensure Alroy Oval delivers a safe and high-quality facility for our community.
About the project
Council awarded the Alroy Oval redevelopment to Glascott Landscape and Civil. Site establishment occurred on 26 August 2024, construction began in September 2024 and the facility was officially opened on 21 February 2026.
The Alroy Oval Sports Precinct will deliver an improved recreational sports hub for the Singleton Strikers and community members.
There is a particular focus on promoting women and girls to participate in organised sport, especially football. Improved outcomes for women and girls as a result of the project include easy access to a purpose-built gender-neutral amenities building including shower cubicles, mirrors over handbasins and power points for personal care appliances. Upgrades to the car park, footpaths and lighting will enhance personal safety for users of the facility.
The $8.17million project was funded by a $3million Australian Government Investing In Our Communities grant, a $2million NSW Government Level the Playing Field grant and Council loan fundings.
Works included:
- Demolition of existing buildings and sports facilities
- Construction of new female-friendly and fully accessible amenities building
- Upgraded car park
- New footpaths
- Upgraded lighting
- Upgraded existing football fields and installation of a third football field to provide three full-sized fields with irrigation
The project represents completion of 95 per cent of the Alroy Oval Masterplan adopted in 2021 and follows construction of a full-size public basketball court and soccer-themed local playground under Stage 1.
