Community comes together for a night of entertainment to pass the hat in support of drought-affected

The skies may not be so forthcoming, but there’s a deluge of support as the community comes together for an event to support people doing it tough in the drought.

Hunter Valley Operations has partnered with Singleton Council to host Pass the Hat, a night of live music, good food and good old-fashioned entertainment on Saturday 27 October 2018 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Local businesses have also come on board to sponsor a hay bale on the night.

All proceeds will be passed on to Rural Aid, to be distributed to the farmers who need it most.

Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore said the format for the event would be similar to the successful Firelight held in April this year, with a live band, food trucks and the best in Hunter Valley cheeses and wines on offer on the Civic Green.

“Live music will come from VenderAa Band, which brings a range of different instruments such as didgeridoos, drum jams and a djembe (African drum) to perform a mix of original songs and covers so there’s something for everyone,” she said.

“It will be a great night for people of all ages to come out and enjoy a picnic on the lawn and take advantage of the great food from food trucks on the night along with Hunter Valley wines.

“The idea is to bring people together for a great night of fun and entertainment to demonstrate the support in our community for people affected by the drought, and I’m looking forward to seeing a big crowd.”

There will also be an opportunity for people to access support and assistance on the night, with representatives on hand from Rural Aid, Rural Resilience Program, Salvation Army and Local Land Services.

“First and foremost, we want everyone to have a good time,” Cr Moore said.

“But we also want to make sure people have access to the help and information they need, so people can also talk to someone or find out more about the assistance available in a way that’s convenient and discreet.”
