Something for everyone as age proves no barrier to Seniors festival

From a high tea with all the trimmings to getting crafty, Singleton is the place to celebrate the 2020 NSW Seniors Festival with something for everyone on Wednesday 19 February.

The Singleton Seniors Festival will take over the Singleton Civic Centre from 10am to 3pm showcasing community services organisations and groups available for over 55s including the Schoolies and Seniors Oral History Project, Reading and Heritage with Singleton Library, the Community Services Expo and entertainment.

A program of activities by community groups will also run throughout the week from 12 to 23 February and is available on Council’s website at

Themed ‘Love to Celebrate’, the 2020 NSW Seniors Festival aims to highlight the diverse range of experiences on offer to inspire seniors to be active, socialise, and share their skills and wisdom all while connecting with their community.

Deborah McDonald, Singleton Council’s Acting Director Organisation and Community Capacity, said a special Celebration of Seniors High Tea – catered by Mama’s Kitchen and Singleton High School students – would be a highlight of Singleton’s festivities.

There will also be a giveaway of high quality compost processed by ANL from the material collected in kerbside garden organics bins available to over 55s who attend the expo.

“This is an event to bring seniors together to access services and activities, or even volunteer for a local organisation,” Ms McDonald said.

“The expo will cover sport, arts, culture, health and community services as well as special interest groups providing information and opportunities.

“Best of all – it’s all free. The Celebration of Seniors High Tea will involve a reserved seating, fully-catered high tea including games, entertainment and music by Singleton High School students.

“Simply contact us at Council on 02 6578 7290 to reserve your seat at the high tea, enjoy free entertainment and browse the sites at the expo.”

The Seniors Festival Expo includes:

  • Reading and Heritage with Singleton Library
  • Craft and sewing with Singleton craft groups
  • Cooking and baking with CWA
  • Making with Men’s Shed and Singleton Woodworkers
  • Knowledge with U3A
  • Engaging with school students
  • Community services organisations providing information stalls

Ms McDonald said she looked forward to seeing as many over 55s as possible come along to the event.

“It’s wonderful that such a range of organisations and community services are coming together to provide a one-stop shop for over 55s looking for information, a group to join or a new hobby,” she said.

“This may be an event targeting seniors, but it’s also a showcase that it’s never too late to make new friends, try something new and get involved in the community.”
